Tell me about yourself.
- My name is Gillian, I have been staying here in Siena for three months now, no, for six months. I like it very much here. Previously I was living in London, in the suburbs. I am a children’s physiotherapist, but now I am retired because I have decided to come and live here with my husband. He is very happy working here in Siena.
So, your husband s working here in Siena. Welcome to Siena! What do you like to do in your spare time?
- At the moment nearly all my time is spare time. I enjoy reading, walking and gardening.
Do you have a garden here?
- No not here, but we have a little terrace with plants in pots.
So you have green fingers!
- Green and yellow, some of my plants are struggling to survive. I have a war on against the pigeons. They are making trouble for my plants.
Do you like to walk?
- Very much.I go walking on Saturdays. Last Saturday we took a trip to the woods near Monte Maggio, close to here. We took the bus to Santa Colomba. It is a very pretty area, and there are lots of good paths to follow.
You like to be outside in the country?
- Yes!
You have been here in Siena for six months. How do you like it?
- I like it very much and it will be a lot easier once I speak better Italian. At the moment I am a bit isolated.
Is this your first Italian course?
- No I had already followed a course a year ago but I have forgotten a lot.
Was your teacher Italian?
- Italian from Tuscany, called Stefania, Stefania Ricci I think, a splendid teacher.
If I go to London, Gillian, where should I go?
- Well I don't like London very much, but there are so many concerts to go to there. There are lots of other cultural activities, exhibitions and lots of old palaces to visit.
I was in London for a month on a language course, and I visited loads of beautiful places.
- I really prefer the countryside!
Is it different from the Tuscan countryside?
- Very different! The English countryside is greener, damper and the colors are softer than in Tuscany, less intense. The Tuscan light is clearer, very beautiful.
Is there something that you like in particular about the Tuscan cuisine?
- I love the food too much. Italians want to intensify the taste of each food, not mix and hide it with other tastes.
Do you feel safe here walking around Siena?
- Yes the town is very safe though very noisy around the time of the Palio. There was the festival week of the Istrice contrada last week just where I live. There were street parties, street dinners, beautiful parades in costumes all week, with lots of excitement and flags and drums. It was very noisy and I loved it. I really like the use of public space here. The Sienese feel that the streets and public spaces belong to them. So they use them as their own place. The city seems to belong to the people. The nice buildings and public places have not been sold off into private hands. Be careful that it doesn’t happen!
Can you say something about your experiences here in the school?
- I like this school. It is very good. The classes are very small, the students are interesting and interested in trying hard to learn to speak Italian.  I was interested in the seminar when we were going through the day’s newspaper, because it helps me with the vocabulary I need. I enjoy reading the newspaper.
Do you want to continue to study Italian?
- Yes. I have to return to England one week every month, but I want to continue learning Italian. It is more difficult when you are a bit older, because it is hard to remember the words.

- Qui no, abbiamo una piccola terrazza con le piante.

- No ... verde e giallo perché le mie piante sono un po’ appassite! Non mi piacciono i piccioni ... ho una piccola guerra con loro!
Ti piace camminare?
- Molto, lo faccio tutti i sabati. Sabato scorso abbiamo fatto una piccola gita a piedi nel bosco a Montemaggio, vicino Siena, abbiamo preso l’autobus n° 37 per Santa Colomba. E’ una bella zona, ci sono bei sentieri nei boschi ...
Ti piace stare in mezzo la natura!
- Sì!
Stai a Siena da tre mesi. Come ti trovi?
- Bene! Sarà più facile quando saprò parlare meglio italiano, altrimenti sono isolata.
Questo è il tuo primo corso di italiano?
- No, ho fatto un corso in Inghilterra, un anno fa, ma ho dimenticato molto.
Il tuo insegnante era italiano?
- Toscano. Si chiama Stefania, è una brava insegnante … Stefania Ricci penso, insegna a Richmond.
Se vengo a Londra, Gillian, dove mi porti?
- Londra non mi piace molto.. ma ci sono tanti concerti, c’è tanta attività culturale, tante mostre, tanti palazzi antichi ...
Sono stata a Londra per un mese per un corso di lingua inglese, e ho visitato tanti bei posti ...
- Mi piace molto tutta la campagna!
E’ differente dalla campagna toscana?
- Sì, molto differente! La campagna inglese è più verde, più umida ... e i colori sono più dolci di quelli della campagna toscana, meno intensi ... La luce toscana è più chiara, bellissima ...
C’è qualcosa della cucina toscana che ti piace tanto?
- Oh mi piace troppo! I cibi toscani mi piacciono molto, perché gli italiani vogliono conoscere il sapore vero del cibo, non vogliono coprire il sapore con altri, ma esaltare il sapore proprio di ogni cosa.
Quando tu passeggi per Siena ti senti tranquilla?
- Sì, la città è molto sicura ma è rumorosa nei periodi del Palio! C’era la festa della contrada dell’Istrice giorni fa, con feste, cene, cortei in costume ... questo mi piace molto! L’uso dello spazio pubblico mi piace. A Siena i cittadini pensano che gli spazi, le strade siano loro, e il comune non ha venduto tutto a negozi privati, quindi lo spazio pubblico è davvero della città e dei cittadini. Penso che le persone sentano di appartenere alla propria città!
Puoi dire qualcosa della tua esperienza qui a scuola?
- E’ molto buona, mi piace questa scuola, le classi sono piccole, gli studenti sono interessanti e intelligenti e lavorano molto per imparare a parlare Italiano ... Mi è piaciuta molto la discussione che abbiamo fatto a scuola sulla lettura dei giornali, perché mi dà parole per capire i giornali, mi piace leggere i giornali.
Vuoi continuare lo studio dell’italiano?
- Sì! Devo tornare in Inghilterra una settimana al mese ma ho voglia di continuare a studiare Italiano. E’ difficile quando una persona è anziana, perché non ricordo tanto le parole ...
