So, Bruce, where are you from?
- I was born in North Dakota, a very cold state where there aren't a lot of people. But now, I live in a city in Minnesota, the state next to North Dakota.
And why did you decide to move?
- Because there isn’t much to do in North Dakota. It's a large plain with sunflowers, wheat and that’s it. It’s a very beautiful place, the sky is huge, endless, but I wanted to live in a larger city.
Does your family live in the country?
- No, in the capital, Bismarck, which is similar than Siena because it’s small, maybe seventy thousand people. So, after I graduated from the university, I went to live in Minnesota, in the city of St. Paul.
What did you study at school?
- English literature mainly, to become a writer. But there aren’t many opportunities to work in that field. I can’t open a shop to sell English! [laughs] Later, I started to work in the courts. I worked there for 33 years. I was “the hammer man” in court, the one that states the verdict. It was a very interesting job, but after 15 years the computer became the most important thing, and they needed people working in that area. I knew a lot about computers, so since then I've been doing that in St. Paul.
Can you tell us a little bit about the city of St. Paul?
- It’s a very beautiful city. In the summer, the sky is clear, the ground is green, it’s fantastic. There are many places to visit. We have a nice art museum and a lot of beautiful parks like Battle Creek park. I live a mile away from the Mississippi River, which is very beautiful. As for a place to eat, it’s hard to say. a … restaurants in the United States, I won’t say they’re the best in the world! [laugh]. I can give you some advice: if you want to eat well in Minnesota, don't eat in an Italian restaurant! [laugh]
We know that your passion is literature, let’s talk about it …  who's your favorite writer?
- There’s a writer from the United States, Michael Chabon, he’s fantastic. He writes about modern life complications. What about the English literature classics?
- My favorite one is Jane Austen. My favorite book is Northanger Abbey, because in this story the girl is innocent, very young, she doesn’t know anything about the world. Also I like Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, with the character of Mr. Darcy. They're all beautiful.
And you, what do you want to write about?
- I have an idea, to write a novel about three people, similar to the style of Jane Austen: the characters are an older man, a young woman, and a young man. The young man cultivates olive trees here in Italy and he explains to the girl that, at a certain point, the trunk of the olive tree has to be cut, because it's better for the branches. I think it's a metaphor of life. It's a little difficult to explain. [laughs] The older man dies, and the other characters grow after his death. It's just an idea.

That’s beautiful! You came up with that idea before you came to Italy?
- It came to me here!
Speaking of Italy: why did you decide to come here and study Italian?
- Let’s see! 12 years ago, I had the dream to travel to Florence, to see ll Davide, the Uffizi gallery, Botticelli, Renaissance art, etc. Then, I came to Italy for the first time, to Florence. I didn’t speak Italian at all, but when I arrived I fell in love with the city, the country,the people, everything! At that point, I wanted to learn Italian, so I started to study by myself, using a computer, in the United States. It was good, but I wasn’t learning fast, so I asked a friend, who’s a language teacher, "How can I learn better?” And he answered me immediately: “You should go to Italy”.
So, you decided to come to Siena. - Yes! The first time was three years ago, to Saena Iulia. My friend had seen the school in the Lonely Planet guide, and he advised me to go. Also, there was a friend that had come to Siena, and she told me that this was her favorite Italian city, so I chose this city and this school.

How has the experience been?
- Beautiful! I can’t speak, there are no words. It's perfect here. Everybody is so nice, they love their work and life. This is the second time that I have come here to the school.
And why did you came back?
- Because it isn’t a question! This is the only Italian school in Italy for me. I can't imagine another. The school is not just about lessons, excursions, the coffee break - which I love - but also to be able to share with different people. Everything!
Let’s talk a little bit about Siena; what’s your favorite place here?
- When I want to think a little, I go to Banchi di Sopra (the street, because there are so many people and I become a ghost!  But my favorite place is Piazza del Campo after the rain. It’s very beautiful, not many tourists, the square shines, it's fresh, I love it.
Perhaps that inspires you for a new idea for a book. - Could be! [laugh]
Have you written something here?
- No! First, I have to come up with the idea, then think about the plot and later, start writing.
Maybe, one of your characters is inspired by somebody that you met here.
- I won’t say anything, that’s a secret! [laughs]

Allora Bruce, di dove sei?
- Sono nato in North Dakota, uno stato molto freddo, non c’è molta gente lì… ma adesso, vivo in una città in Minnesota, lo stato accanto al North Dakota.
E perché hai deciso di cambiare?
- Non c’è molto da fare in North Dakota, è una grandissima pianura, girasoli, grano e basta. È un posto bello, il cielo è enorme, infinito, ma volevo abitare in una città più grande.
La tua famiglia vive in campagna?
- No, nella capitale, Bismarck, che è simile a Siena perché è piccola, forse 70 mila persone. Quindi, dopo l’università sono andato a vivere in Minnesota, nella città di San Paul.
Cos’hai studiato all’Università ?
- Letteratura inglese principalmente, per diventare uno scrittore; ma non ci sono molte opportunità per lavorare in questo campo, non posso aprire un negozio per vendere l’inglese [ride]! Dopo ho cominciato a lavorare in tribunale; ci ho lavorato per 33 anni, ero “l’uomo del martello” nel tribunale, quello che enuncia il verdetto. Era un lavoro molto interessante, ma dopo 15 anni il computer è diventato la cosa più importante, e lì avevano bisogno di persone per lavorarci. Io lo conoscevo bene; quindi da quel momento fino ad adesso faccio quel lavoro a San Paul.
Puoi raccontarci un po’ della città di San Paul?
- È una città molto bella! In estate il cielo è chiarissimo, la terra è verde, fantastica. Ci sono molti posti da visitare, abbiamo un bel museo d’arte e molti parchi belli come il parco Battle creek. Abito a un chilometro dal fiume Mississippi, che è molto bello. Per andare a mangiare, difficile dire… i ristoranti negli Stati Uniti, non direi che sono i migliori del mondo [ride] … posso dare solo un consiglio: se vai a mangiare in Minnesota, non mangiare in un ristorante italiano! [ride]
Sappiamo che la tua passione è la letteratura, parliamone… qual’è il tuo scrittore preferito?
-  C’è un scrittore degli Stati Uniti che si chiama Michael Chabon, è bravissimo. Scrive delle complicazioni della vita moderna.
E dei classici della letteratura inglese?
- Quella che mi piace di più è Jane Austen! Il mio libro preferito è Northanger Abbey, perché in questa storia la ragazza è innocente, molto giovane, non sa niente del mondo … anche mi piace Sense and sensibility, Pride and Perjudice, con il personaggio del signor Darcy … tutti sono belli!
E a te cosa piacerebbe scrivere?
- Ho un’idea, scrivere un romanzo di tre persone, simile allo stile di Jane Austen: i personaggi sono un uomo più vecchio, una donna più giovane, ed un ragazzo. Il ragazzo coltiva l’olivo qui in Italia e lui spiega alla ragazza che, a un certo punto, il tronco dell’olivo si deve tagliare, perché è meglio per i rami… penso che sia una metafora della vita…è un po’ complicato da spiegare![ride] … il signore più vecchio muore, e gli altri personaggi crescono dopo la sua morte … è soltanto un’idea …
Che bello! Quest’idea l’hai avuta qui in Italia o prima di venire?
-L’ho pensato qui!
Parlando dell’Italia: perché hai deciso di venire qui a studiare l’italiano?
- Vediamo! 12 anni fa, avevo il sogno di viaggiare a Firenze, a vedere Il Davide, la Galleria degli Uffizi, Botticelli, l’arte del Rinascimento, ecc. Poi sono venuto per la prima volta in Italia a Firenze. Non parlavo per niente italiano, ma quando sono arrivato mi sono innamorato della città, del paese, della gente, di tutto! A questo punto, volevo imparare l’italiano, e ho cominciato a studiare da solo al computer, negli Stati Uniti. È andato bene, ma non imparavo velocemente, quindi ho domandato a un amico insegnante di lingua: “Come posso imparare meglio”? E lui, subito, mi ha risposto:“ Devi andare in Italia!”
E quindi, hai deciso di venire a Siena …
- Sì! Sono venuto per la prima volta tre anni fa alla Scuola Saena Iulia. Il mio amico aveva visto la scuola nella guida Lonely Planet, e mi aveva consigliato di venire. C’era anche un’amica che era venuta a Siena, e lei mi aveva detto che era la sua città preferita in Italia; quindi ho scelto questa città e questa scuola.
E come è stata l’esperienza?
- Bellissima! Non posso parlare, non ci sono parole … qui è perfetto … tutti sono molto gentili, amano il lavoro e la vita. Questa è la seconda volta che sono venuto qui.
E perché sei ritornato?
- Perché non è una decisione! Questa è l’unica scuola di italiano in Italia per me. Non posso immaginarne un’altra … la scuola non è soltanto lezioni, escursioni, la pausa – che mi piace molto!- ma condividere con persone diverse, tutto!
Parliamo un po’ di Siena; qual è il tuo posto preferito qui?
- Quando voglio pensare un po’ vado a Banchi di Sopra, perché ci sono tante persone ed io divento un fantasma [ride] … ma il mio posto preferito è Piazza del Campo dopo la pioggia. È molto bello, non ci sono molti turisti, il campo brilla, è fresco, mi piace molto.
Forse, quello ti ispira un’altra idea per un libro …
- Può darsi [ride]
Hai scritto qualcosa qui?
- No! Prima devo avere un’idea, dopo pensare alla trama e dopo ancora cominciare a scrivere …
Magari ti sei ispirato in qualche persona che hai conosciuto qui …
- Non lo dirò, quello è un segreto! [ride]
