Could you tell me a little bit about yourself?
- My name is Ian, I’m from London and I study law. Two years ago I lived in Italy for eight months and I learned a little Italian but not the grammar or the literature.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
- I like running and sport in general. I like to travel and I have visited other places in Italy such as Naples, Florence, Sicily and also Siena. I have also been to Thailand. The food and the way of life are a lot different from England. I liked it. It is very lively and there are lots of different tastes and smells. It was a good experience.
You like to travel. Are there other things?
- I like to cook. I sometimes try to make Italian dishes, like risotto, tiramisu, panna cotta.
You know how to make tiramisu!
- Yes I like it a lot and I thought I must learn how to make it!
Good idea! Why are you studying Italian Ian?
- Mainly for pleasure. My friends speak other languages like German, French and before I could not speak anything but I wanted to change this situation and learn a language. I thought that speaking Italian would give me the possibility to stay in Italy.
What was your first contact with Italian?
- It was two years ago when I came to Italy but I could not speak the language. I could only say “ciao” and “prego” and that was all. It was a little difficult but I liked lots of things about the Italian way of life, like on Sunday mornings when people are carrying the cakes. There are always people with a parcel of little cakes. This is a nice thing, this way of life.
What a nice observation ... it’s true! Often on Sunday morning we buy the cakes for lunch ...
- And I like Italian fashion. People are always dressed elegantly and that's a good thing. I like it.

Do you also like Italian breakfasts? - Even when I am in England I usually have only an espresso or a caffè macchiato.

Is there a bar where you normally go?
- No, I bought a caffettiera and I do it by myself.
Ian, is there a book or an Italian film that you know?
- I tried to read a book by Italo Calvino, Our Ancestors. There are three stories in this book. One is called “ The Baron in the Trees.” It is a little strange, but at the same time interesting. It is about a boy who decides to live in the trees. He tells his father, “I’m never coming down,” and so he lived all his life in the trees!
Books by Calvino are always a little surreal, but they always have some meaning. If you can read Calvino you must be good at Italian!
- One of my friends recommended this writer. I wanted to read, If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller which is his most famous book, but I couldn’t find it in English!
In English?! You can read Italian! Ian, tell me about something interesting in your town.
- In London there are lots of people from all over the world. It is very international and I like i. I like the National Gallery. There are lots of types of people, school children. There are exhibitions of paintings that show how a painting was made, technical demonstrations. It is also a very calm place where a person can sit and relax.
And where can I go to eat and drink in London, what do you recommend?
- In London there are lots of restaurants of many nationalities where it is possible to eat well. In particular it is possible to eat well at “Wheelers.” for the good seafood. It is a very small restaurant, ten or twelve seats. It is in Whitstable.
You have had classes with students of different ages. How have you found it?
- It was very useful. Otherwise there is the temption to speak only with people who are like me. But when the people are different it is more stimulating, especially when we speak or when we have a discussion.
Do you find Siena a safe city?
- Yes, it is very safe. For example in the Piazza del Campo at midnight there are always lots of different types of people -- children, teenagers, parents, old people -- all together. The atmosphere is very pleasant!
What is the first thing you will do when you get home?
- Right after I get home I will have to get all my things ready because I start classes at the university next week. At the moment I haven’t done anything. It is a small problem but I can worry later. Now I want to enjoy myself during my last days in Siena!

Mi parli un po’ di te?
- Mi chiamo Ian, sono di Londra e studio giurisprudenza. Due anni fa ho abitato in Italia per otto mesi e ho imparato un po’ di italiano, ma non la grammatica o la letteratura.
Cosa ti piace fare nel tuo tempo libero?
- Mi piace molto fare jogging e lo sport in generale. Mi piace viaggiare e ho visitato altri posti in Italia come Napoli, Firenze, la Sicilia e anche Siena. Sono andato anche in Tailandia ... è molto diversa dall’Inghilterra per il cibo e il modo di vivere ... mi è piaciuta, è molto vivace e ci sono molti colori e molti sapori differenti ... è stata una buona esperienza!
Ti piace viaggiare, ci sono anche altre cose?
- Mi piace anche cucinare, provo a cucinare dei piatti italiani, qualche volta, come il risotto, il tiramisù, la panna cotta ...

- Sì ... mi piace molto e ho pensato: devo imparare a farlo!
Ottima idea! Perché studi italiano Ian?
- Soprattutto per piacere. I miei amici parlano altre lingue come tedesco, francese e prima io non parlavo niente ma volevo cambiare questa situazione e imparare una lingua. Così ho pensato che parlare italiano mi avrebbe dato la possibilità di stare in Italia.
Il tuo primo contatto con l’italiano?
- E’ stato due anni fa, quando sono venuto in Italia ma non potevo parlare la lingua, potevo solo dire “ciao”, “prego”, e basta! Era un po’ difficile ma mi sono piaciute tutte le cose della vita italiana, come quando le persone portano i dolci la domenica mattina ... sempre le persone sono con un vassoio di dolci ... questo è così carino ... questo modo di vivere ...
Che bella osservazione... è vero! Spesso la domenica compriamo dei dolci per il pranzo ...
- ... e mi piace la moda italiana ... la gente è sempre vestita in modo elegante e questa è una cosa buona, che mi piace!
Ti piace anche la prima colazione italiana?
- Anche quando sono in Inghilterra di solito prendo solo un espresso o un caffè macchiato.
C’è un bar dove vai di solito?
- No, ho comprato una caffettiera e lo faccio da solo!
Ian, c’è un libro o un film Italiano che ti ha colpito?
- Ho provato a leggere un libro di Italo Calvino, I nostri antenati, ci sono tre storie in questo libro ... una si chiama “La vita sugli alberi”. E’ un po’ strano ma allo stesso tempo interessante, parla di un bambino che decide di vivere sempre sugli alberi. Quando era piccolo ha detto a suo padre “Non scenderò mai!” e così ha vissuto tutta la vita sugli alberi!
I libri di Calvino sono sempre un po’ surreali, ma hanno sempre qualche significato ... se puoi leggere Calvino allora sei proprio bravo in italiano!
- Una delle mie amiche mi ha raccomandato questo scrittore. Volevo leggere Se una notte d’inverno, un viaggiatore, questo è il suo libro più famoso, ma non ho potuto trovarlo in inglese!
In inglese? Tu puoi leggerlo in italiano! Ian mi dici qualcosa di bello che c’è nel tuo paese?
- A Londra ci sono molte persone da tutto il mondo, è molto internazionale e questo mi piace. Mi piace molto la Galleria Nazionale, ci sono tutti i tipi di persone ... bambini della scuola, ci sono mostre di pittura che mostrano come un’opera è stata fatta. Mostre tecniche, è anche un posto molto tranquillo, una persona si può sedere e rilassarsi.
E dove vado a mangiare e a bere io a Londra, cosa mi consigli?
- A Londra ci sono molti ristoranti di tutte le nazionalità, dove è possibile mangiare bene. In particolare è possibile mangiare bene da Wheeler, cucina bene i frutti di mare. E’ un ristorante piccolissimo, sei o otto posti ... si trova a Whitstable.
Ian, tu hai avuto in classe studenti di differenti età. Come ti sei trovato?
- E’ stato molto utile. Altrimenti c’è la tentazione di parlare solo con persone che sono come me, invece quando la gente è differente è più stimolante ... specialmente quando parliamo e quando abbiamo una discussione.
Trovi Siena una città sicura?
- Sì, è molto sicura! Per esempio in Piazza del Campo a mezzanotte c’è sempre un sacco di gente differente ... bambini piccoli, adolescenti, genitori e adulti ... tutti insieme. L’atmosfera è molto piacevole!
Qual è la prima cosa che farai quando arriverai a casa?
- Appena arrivato a casa devo preparare tutte le mie cose perché comincio l’università la prossima settimana. Adesso non ho niente da fare. E’ un piccolo problema ma me ne preoccuperò dopo ... ora voglio divertirmi durante il mio ultimo giorno a Siena!
