Hi Kathleen! To begin: Why did you decide to learn Italian?
- I’ve been wanting to learn Italian for a long time. Over the years, I have done a lot of traveling, and Italy is my favorite country. I have always regretted that I didn’t know the language, so that I could get to know the Italian people and understand their culture.
And how did you start to learn?
- Well, I started out by studying languages in high school. Then I lived in Mexico for a year, so I have always been interested in languages. So you can see why I wanted to learn Italian.
You are also an artist and a globetrotter, right?
- Yes! Traveling is one of my greatest passions. I started traveling when I was attending California College of Arts and Crafts, and the school had an extension program in Mexico. That experience made me want to see the rest of the world. While I was there, I had the opportunity to travel all over the country, and I visited the workshops of artists working with papier-machè, ceramics, etc.
So, to create` your art, you take part of the culture of the places you visit?
- Yes, I have also spent some time in Guatemala, where I collect Guatemalan textiles. A lot of what attracts me is the art of the common people. For me, folk art has a lot more life in it than the art of most formally trained artists. I am always looking for ideas that I can “steal” and incorporate into my art. Now, let’s talk a little bit about your hometown, Morro Bay
- I was born in San Luis Obispo, but now I live in Morro Bay, California, which is nearby. Its a beautiful place by the ocean, very quiet and peaceful. There are lots of good places to eat. One of my favorites is Giancarlo’s, an Italian restaurant. When I’m there, I love to walk on the beach. That’s my favorite thing to do, and, of course, planning my next trip!
And how did you plan your trip to Siena?
- I am a member of the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco. I asked them if they had any suggestions for language schools in Italy. They told me about Saena Iulia. I looked online and saw many very positive reviews, including a lot of reviews from students who had been back several times. I was very impressed. Why would the students keep returning. That was a mystery. I thought, ”They must really love the school.”   
Did you solve the mystery?
- Yes, because I became friends with some of the returning students! [laugh] I saw their enthusiasm, how well they were speaking Italian. I thought, “Oh my goodness, these people are doing great!” And, now I’m so pleased with the school that I want to return. Also, as an artist, this has been so special to me, because the people at school are so into art and willing to help you if there is something special that you want to see. The lectures about art and culture were very unique.
Speaking of Siena ... what’s your favorite spot? What could be like your “walk on the beach?”
- That’s a beautiful challenge! [laughing] Siena is a very exciting place. There’s nothing like “walking on the beach” but there are so many wonderful places to walk here. I love the little side streets, finding new neighborhoods or churches, just discovering things.
And a special moment here at the school?
- I love it all, but my favorite times have been on the trips with the school to the little villages near Siena. Many of the places I would never have known about or visited on my own. These experiences created the most beautiful memories. That was very meaningful to me.
So you’ll have a new inspiration when you go back to your art!
- Yes, I hope so! Well, I would like to do some pieces related to Siena and Il Palio, because I love the Palio banners and all the traditions. I’m definitely planning to come back to Siena and to the school.
So, you have to come back to see Il Palio!
- Yes! That would be great!

Ciao Kathleen! Per cominciare, come mai hai deciso di imparare l’italiano?
-Volevo imparare l’italiano da molto tempo! Nel corso degli anni, ho fatto un sacco di viaggi, e l’Italia è il mio paese preferito. Ho sempre rimpianto di non sapere la lingua, per conoscere meglio il popolo italiano e capire la sua cultura.
E come hai cominciato a studiare?
- Ho iniziato studiando lingue al liceo. Poi, ho vissuto in Messico per un anno, quindi sono sempre stata interessata alle lingue. Da questo puoi capire perché ho voluto imparare l’italiano. 
Inoltre, sei un’artista e una giramondo, vero?
- Sì! Viaggiare è una delle mie passioni. Ho cominciato a viaggiare quando studiavo arte al California College of Arts and Crafts, e la scuola aveva un programma in Messico. Quest’esperienza mi ha fatto desiderare di vedere il resto del mondo. Mentre ero lì, ho avuto l’opportunità di viaggiare in tutto il paese, e ho visitato i luoghi degli artisti che ci lavoravano, con papier machè, ceramica, ecc. 
Quindi, per le tue creazioni, prendi spunto dalla cultura di ogni posto che visiti?
- Sì, sono stata anche in Guatemala, dove ho raccolto tessuti guatemaltechi. Molto di ciò che mi attrae è l'arte della gente comune. Per me, l'arte etnico ha molta più vita in essa che l'arte degli artisti più accademici. Sono sempre alla ricerca di idee che posso "rubare" e incorporare nel mio lavoro. Adesso, parliamo un po’ del tuo paese, Morro Bay
- Io sono nata a San Luis Obispo, ma adesso vivo a Morro Bay, in California, molto vicino. È un posto bellissimo vicino al mare, molto tranquillo. Ci sono tanti posti buoni per mangiare, il mio preferito è Giancarlo’s, un ristorante italiano. Quando sono a casa, quello che mi piace di più è camminare sulla spiaggia, e pianificare il mio prossimo viaggio!
E come hai pianificato il tuo viaggio a Siena?
- Io sono membro dell'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di San Francisco. Lì ho chiesto di consigliarmi alcune scuole di lingue in Italia. Loro mi hanno parlato della Saena Iulia, ho visto il sito web e ci sono tanti commenti positivi, anche degli studenti che sono tornati molte volte! Sono rimasta molto colpita da questi commenti … perché gli studenti tornavano molte volte? Quello era un mistero per me. Ho pensato “devono veramente amare questa scuola …”
Hai risolto il mistero?
- Sì, perché quegli studenti sono diventati i miei amici! [ride] Ho visto il loro entusiasmo, quanto parlavano bene italiano, e ho pensato “Oh mio Dio, queste persone sono bravissime!”E adesso sono così contenta della scuola che anch’io voglio ritornarci. Inoltre, come artista questa esperienza è stata molto speciale per me, perché le persone nella scuola sono molto interessate all’arte e cercano di aiutarti se c'è qualcosa di speciale che si desidera vedere. I seminari sull’arte e cultura sono molti speciali …
Parlando di Siena … qual è il tuo posto preferito? Quello che per te potrebbe essere la "passeggiata sulla spiaggia"?
- Questa è una bella sfida! [ridendo] Siena è una città molto bella. Non c’è niente come “camminare sulla spiaggia”, ma è pieno di posti fantastici per passeggiare. Amo i vicoli, trovare nuovi quartieri o chiese e semplicemente scoprire nuove cose. 
E un momento speciale qui a scuola?
-Mi piace tutto, ma i miei momenti preferiti sono stati nelle gite che facciamo nei paesi vicini a Siena. Molti di questi luoghi non li avrei trovati mai se ci fossi andata da sola. Queste esperienze hanno creato i miei più bei ricordi, che significano molto per me.
Magari, avrai una nuova ispirazione quando tornerai alle tue creazioni!
- Spero di sì! Mi piacerebbe fare alcuni pezzi legati a Siena e il Palio, perché mi piacciono molto l’arte del Palio e tutte le tradizioni.
Quindi, devi ritornare per Il Palio!
- Sì, sarebbe fantastico!
