- I’m from Pleasanton, California …

- Oh, I live there. I was born in the Northeast part of the U.S.

- In Rhode Island, near Boston and New York.

- More than 35 years. I live near San Francisco.
What part of the United States do you know best?
- (laughing) A good question. Probably the region we call the Bay Area of San Francisco because I’ve worked and lived there for many years.
How many times have you been to Italy?
- Five times. The first time was in ’86, with my father.
… and in Siena … how many times?
- Twice. The first time was in ’88, with my husband but we didn’t remember anything. It was as if we had never been here.
You’re no longer working?
- No.
What do you like to do in your free time?
- I like to study Italian. I took two courses before coming here, with two teachers. And I like to do volunteer work. I had mentioned that I work with St. Vincent dePaul. We help the poor in my town, Pleasanton.

- Oh, absolutely the city di San Francisco and also the wine region--Napa or right next to Pleasanton there’s a little region with more than 20 wineries.

- The Livermore Valley.
What’s your favorite restaurant in San Francisco?
- Oh boy, that’s tough to say. There are so many. I like ethnic food---Thai, Italian, Vietnamese, Japanese. There are some sushi restaurants that I like. I don’t like rich food, but rather, simple food. Simple!
Do you know how to cook?
- Oh yes, yes.
Do you also cook ethnic food?
- Yes, I cook Italian and Asian food. My husband also likes to cook, but when it comes to Asian food, he says, “That’s up to you” (laughing).

- Oh, he likes to eat it, he just doesn’t want to cook it. That’s something different.

- Yes, it was the best book, in any language, that I’d read in the last five years. Yes, I really liked it.

- Yes, I saw it. One of my Italian teachers loans me a lot of DVD’s of Italian movies. She’s very generous.
Do you have a favorite wine?
- Yes, it’s a wine that costs only 2 dollars: Charles something, I don’t remember the name, but everyone calls it “Two-Buck Chuck.” Chuck is the nickname for Charles. It’s a merlot (laughing); It’s like a table wine. For an everyday wine it’s OK.
Now, let’s return to Siena. In these days that the Palio is going on, there’s the preparation for the Palio, the city is changing a bit, no?
- Yes, the Campo is changing each day. There are certain things … the ground, the balconies...it’s interesting to see the changes
What can you say about this city now that you know it better?
- The Campo and the Duomo … I went twice to the Duomo for Mass and once for a concert, one evening--last Thursday. It was fantastic. There were musicians and singers, the opera … Probably you know them all and for you it’s normal, but for us it’s extraordinary.
It was a positive experience this time period here in Siena?
- Yes. It’s difficult to leave. I’ve fallen in love with “ribollita” soup and “pici all’anatra” pasta and “ricciarelli” cookies. I got Elisa’s recipe for ribollita.
If you had to advise a person arriving in Siena what to do or eat … or a restaurant … what would you recommend.
- Oh we found a little osteria-pizzeria without a name where there’s a woman in her 60’s who speaks only Italian. She understands English but speaks only Italian. I like that because the biggest problem is that the wait-staff wants to speak English and I have to insist. I like it when a person speaks in Italian.
And where is this pizzeria without a name?
- Maybe on Via Banchi di Sopra. I don’t remember the name because it seems to say only “Pizzeria-Osteria” …

Then I like the restaurant San Desiderio. I tried the ribollita in 3 or 4 restaurants and they have the best there, in my opinion. Then there’s a little restaurant Sabrina recommended, teeny tiny with maybe 6 tables.

- Yes I like the roast pork and I always have the white beans with oil.
Can you say something about Siena … and about us?
- About Siena I would say not to come in June, July, August. We’re here in June only because my cousin’s wedding is July 1. I would have come in May, April. It’s a little crowded, but not in the evening or early morning. As for the school, the teachers are incredible. It seems they have a passion for teaching. Maybe especially Elisa. She demands nothing less than perfection (laughing), and I like that. But they’re all marvelous.
I would have liked to have had—(how do you say it?)—the first morning. As an example, how to use the website. I didn’t know that Elisa was reporting the news on it every day. I learned about it after a week and a half from Mike, the English man. “Orientation” is the word I was looking for. Just something for 10 minutes or something to give us in writing, because we’re the lost sheep (laughing) the first week.

- Sì … il Campo cambia … ogni giorno ci sono più cose particolari … la terra, i balconi … è interessante vedere i cambiamenti …
Che cosa puoi dire di questa città adesso che la conosci meglio …?
- Il Campo e il Duomo … sono venuta due volte a messa al Duomo e una volta per un concerto, una sera … giovedì scorso … è stato fantastico … c’erano i musicisti ed i cantanti, l’opera … probabilmente li conosci tutti, per voi è normale, ma per noi è straordinario …
E’ stata un’esperienza positiva, questo periodo qui a Siena?
- Sì, è difficile partire … mi sono innamorata della “ribollita” e dei “pici all’anatra” … e dei “ricciarelli” … ho avuto la ricetta della ribollita da Elisa!
Se tu dovessi consigliare ad una persona che arriva a Siena qualcosa da fare o da mangiare … o un ristorante … che cosa consiglieresti?
- Oh … abbiamo trovato una piccola osteria, pizzeria senza nome … dove c’è una donna sui sessanta che parla soltanto italiano … capisce inglese ma parla soltanto italiano … e mi piace, perché il più grande problema è che i camerieri vogliono parlare in inglese e … devo insistere … mi piace tanto quando una persona parla in italiano …
E dove si trova questa pizzeria senza nome?
- Forse in Via Banchi di Sopra … non mi ricordo il nome, perché sembra dire soltanto “Pizzeria, Osteria” …

- Di Siena direi di non venirci a giugno, luglio ad agosto … sono qui a giugno soltanto perché il matrimonio di mia cugina è il 1° luglio … Sarei venuta a maggio, aprile … è un po’ affollato, ma non di sera o presto la mattina …
Quanto alla scuola … gli insegnanti sono incredibili … sembrano avere una passione per insegnare … forse soprattutto Elisa … lei non aspetta niente di meno della perfezione … (ridendo) … e in questo mi piace … mi piace, ma tutti sono meravigliosi …
Mi sarebbe piaciuto la prima mattina avere un piccolo … come si dice … per esempio, come usare il website … non sapevo che Elisa faceva le notizie ogni giorno, l’ho saputo dopo una settimana e mezza da Mike, l’uomo inglese … “orientation” è la parola che cerco …
