Hi Leanne. Is this your first interview?
- Yes, of course! [laughing]
Where are you from?
- I’m from Canada. I was born in Vancouver and lived there for 12 years. Then my family was transferred to Chilliwack, a very small town in the country. The name is very funny! [Laughing]
How was that change? Do you prefer a big city or the tranquility of the countryside?
- In Chilliwack there are rivers, mountains, beautiful nature, but in Vancouver there is liveliness; there is so much to do, so much to see … so, I prefer Vancouver. Now, I’m studying in Burnaby, a city near Vancouver.
What are you studying at the university?
- First, I went to acting school and got a diploma.
Really? You’re also an actress!
- Sometimes I do theater, but it is very demanding and I don’t have much time. I love it, especially musical theater. I act, sing, but I don’t dance very well! [Laugh] My favorite musical that I was in is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." It was very fun.
What are you studying now?
- Literature and Psychology. There are a lot of students that study two things at the same time, but maybe not Literature, Psychology, Theater, and also Italian. It's a very strange mix but I couldn’t choose one! [Laughing]
And when you’re not studying, what do you do to relax, as a hobby?
- I like to write short stories, play instruments like the violin and piano, and also read.
Can you recommend a good book to us?
- I really love Watership Down, by Richard Adams, but it is a little strange because he talks about rabbits. But, I also love animals, so it’s OK! [Laughing] I also like a lot a book from Italian writer Niccolò Ammaniti, "Io non ho paura." It is very beautiful.
Let’s talk a little bit about your hometown. What do you recommend to do in Vancouver or Burnaby?
- In Vancouver there’s a beautiful street with a lot of nice stores, Granville Street, which is like a typical pedestrian street in Italy. There’s also a fantastic park by the sea, Stanley Park, and a lot of nice beaches.
Are there a lot of Italians in Vancouver?
- Yes! There isn’t a neighborhood like Little Italy, but there are a lot of streets with Italian places and restaurants.
Speaking of Italy, why did you want to learn Italian in the first place?
- My first trip to Europe was in 2007 with my family. We went to London, Paris, but when we came to Italy, I fell in love. It was a lightning strike! So later in 2013, when I got into the university, I decided to learn a language and I thought. “I’m Canadian so I should learn French, but I love Italian so much. I can’t decide.” Then I saw the language lessons schedule: French lesson started at 8:30 and Italian at 10:30. So I chose Italian because I can’t speak another language at 8:30 in the morning! [Laughing]
Why did you decide to come to Siena to study Italian?
- Because in Canada it was very difficult to learn. I had lessons twice a week for an hour, then I got home and I didn't speak Italian with anybody! So, in 2013 my Italian teacher told me to go to the Italian Culture Institute in Vancouver to search for a school in Italy. There were so many options. In order to decide, I asked my mother, because she wanted to come with me too. We saw the reviews on the Saena Iulia website and there were only beautiful words. So we chose it.
How was this first experience? 
- Amazing! I didn’t know much about Siena before. I didn’t know about the Palio; in fact, we arrived in Siena the week of the Palio by chance. We said: “We’re in Siena, what can we do? Oh, there's the Palio!” [laughing] It was beautiful. I hadn't seen anything like that before, the “contrade”, their pride, the songs! I also love the city, to walk around, to get lost in the little streets and have sudden moments where I realize that I’m in Siena! That’s fantastic.
And how was the school experience?
 - Very good! Mauro, Sabrina, Elettra, they’re all so nice and kind. They made my experience very easy and I felt at home. In my class, the first time, there was an Irish couple with their little kids. They were very nice. There was also a German guy and an English girl, all of them fantastic. it was a very interesting mix. Now this is my second time at the school.
Why did you come back? 
- Because in order to learn Italian, I have to study in Italy! And I love to learn here. The teachers, the staff, they made me feel like I’m family, even if I haven’t see them for two years. In two weeks, I also will go to Montevarchi for a month, to live with a family and work on their farm with horses.
That’s amazing! Congratulations on your adventurous spirit! 
- Yes! [Laughing] Really, this is the first time that I have traveled alone to Italy, so is a very different experience. At first I was a little anxious but now I feel very good. 

There will be a next visit?  I don’t know yet but I hope, and soon!

Di dove sei?
- Vengo dal Canada, sono nata a Vancouver, ho vissuto lì 12 anni e dopo la mia famiglia si è trasferita a Chilliwack, una piccolissima città in campagna, il nome è molto buffo! [ride]
Preferisci una grande città o la tranquillità della campagna?
- A Chilliwack c’è il fiume, ci sono le montagne, la natura, ma a Vancouver c’è la vita! Tanto da fare, tanto da vedere … quindi, preferisco Vancouver. Adesso studio a Burnaby, una città molto vicina a Vancouver.
Cosa studi all’Università?
- Prima ho studiato teatro, ho preso un diploma.
Davvero? Sei anche un’attrice!
- A volte faccio teatro, ma è davvero impegnativo e non ho tempo. Mi piace molto, soprattutto il musical! Recito, canto, ma non ballo[ride] Il mio musical preferito è Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, l’abbiamo messo in scena ed è stato molto divertente.
Cosa studi adesso?
- Letteratura inglese e psicologia. Ci sono molti studenti che studiano due cose allo stesso tempo, ma forse non letteratura, psicologia e teatro e anche l’italiano, è una miscela strana ma non ho potuto sceglierne una sola! [ride]
E quando non studi, cosa fai per rilassarti?
- Mi piace scrivere piccoli racconti, suonare degli strumenti, il violino e il pianoforte e anche leggere.
Puoi consigliarci un bel libro?
- Un libro che mi piace molto è Watership Down, di Richard Adams, ma è un po’ strano perche parla di conigli! Ma sono interessata anche agli animali, quindi va bene. [ride] Mi piace molto un libro italiano, Io non ho paura, di Niccolò Ammaniti, è bellissimo.
Parliamo un po’ della tua città, cosa consiglieresti assolutamente di fare a Vancouver o Burnaby?
- A Vancouver c’è una strada bellissima con tanti negozi, Granville Street, come una tipica strada pedonale in Italia. C’è anche un parco fantastico vicino al mare, Stanley Park e tante spiagge.
Ci sono tanti italiani a Vancouver?
- Sì! Non c’è un quartiere come Little Italy, ma ci sono tante strade con ristoranti e posti italiani.
Parlando proprio dell’Italia, come mai hai voluto imparare l’italiano?
- Il mio primo viaggio in Europa è stato nel 2007, con la mia famiglia. Siamo stati a Londra e Parigi , ma quando siamo arrivati in Italia, mi sono innamorata, è stato un colpo di fulmine! Quindi nel 2013, quando sono entrata all’Università, ho deciso di imparare una lingua. Ho pensato: “sono canadese e devo imparare il francese, ma mi piace molto l’italiano, non posso decidermi”. Quindi ho visto gli orari delle lezioni all’Università: francese cominciava alle 8:30 e Italiano alle 10:30. Ho scelto l’italiano, perché non posso parlare una lingua straniera alle 8:30 del mattino! [ride]
E perchè Siena per studiare la lingua?
- Perché in Canada è molto difficile imparare, ho lezione due volta alla settimana per un’ora, dopo vado a casa e non parlo più con nessuno! Allora nel 2013 la mia insegnante mi ha consigliato di andare all’ Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Vancouver, per cercare una scuola in Italia. C’erano tante possibilità! Per decidere, dovevo chiederlo a mia mamma, perché lei voleva venire con me. Abbiamo letto i commenti sul sito web della Saena Iulia e c’erano soltanto parole belle, quindi l’abbiamo scelta.
Come è stata questa prima esperienza?
- Bellissima! Non sapevo molto di Siena prima di venire, non conoscevo neanche Il Palio; infatti, per caso siamo arrivate a Siena la settimana del Palio! Abbiamo detto: “siamo a Siena, cosa facciamo? Oh, c’è Il Palio! [ride] L’ho trovato bellissimo, non avevo visto mai una cosa del genere, le contrade, il loro orgoglio, le canzoni! Mi piace moltissimo la città, camminare, perdermi nei piccoli vicoli, trovare Il Duomo per caso, e rendermi conto che sono a Siena! Tutto questo è fantastico.
E come ti sei trovata nella scuola?
- Molto bene! Mauro, Sabrina ed Elettra sono così gentili, bravissimi, hanno reso la mia esperienza molto facile, mi sono sentita a casa. Nella mia classe, la prima settimana, c’era una coppia irlandese molto simpatica, con i suoi bambini, un tedesco, una ragazza inglese, tutti fantastici, un misto molto interessante. Adesso sono a scuola per la seconda volta.
E perché sei tornata?
- Perché per imparare l’italiano, devo studiare in Italia! E mi piace imparare qui. Gli insegnanti, anche lo staff, mi fanno sentire come in famiglia, anche se non li ho visti da due anni, mi ricevono sempre a braccia aperte. Tra due settimane, andrò anche a Montevarchi per un mese, a vivere con una famiglia e a lavorare nella loro fattoria con i cavalli.
Ma che brava, complimenti per il tuo spirito avventuriero!
- Sì! [ride] Veramente, questa è la prima volta che viaggio da sola in Italia, quindi è un’esperienza differente, prima di venire ero un po’ nervosa ma adesso mi sento molto bene.
Ci sarà un’altra volta?
- Non lo so ancora, ma spero di sì e presto!
