Robert, How long have you been in Italy?
- Five months!
Is this the first time you’ve been to Italy?
- No I visited Liguria several years ago when I was young and last year I went to Florence with my family.
Could you say a few things about yourself?
- OK. I’m English, from London, but I haven’t lived in London for many years. I’m quite persistent/stubborn. To learn Italian was a goal and I couldn't return without having achieved it. For me it was very important to succeed.
Do you remember how your interest in Italian started?
- Yes, my son’s girlfriend speaks Italian very well and the idea came to me last year when we were on holiday together. I knew that my time in Bermuda had come to an end and perhaps I needed to change my life.
... and become a little Italian. Truly a good change!
- Yes, yes because I like Italy very much; the culture, the, how shall we say, way of life, the food, the wine.
Where were you this time last year?
- At this time? Mmm..in Bermuda. Yes, because I’d just returned from my holiday in Florence.
And did you work in Bermuda?
- Yes.
When was the last time you were in a classroom to learn something?
- Oh, many years ago. I was in classes for work, for lessons in management etc. But as far as learning a language goes, 25 years ago!
Was it difficult to be in a class with young people and other adults?
- No, no. At times I thought it would be difficult especially with young people when they don’t want to learn a language, when they are here because their parents or another school has sent them. Because they create problems for those who want to learn.
Was it like this sometimes?
Mmm, only once. There was a girl who didn’t want to learn Italian. Her father had sent her.
Good. Once in 5 months isn’t bad ...
- Yes, it’s not bad. I like the lessons very much. I’ve been very lucky because the classes are small and this is very interesting for me, because it’s more intensive.
Have you had much time to use the language?
- Yes.
And your opinion of Siena?
- Siena is rather conservative. It’s not what you’d expect and it’s quite small. But the countryside is very beautiful.
You’ve traveled a lot, haven’t you?
- Yes, yes, very much. From Grosseto to Florence, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Mt. Amiata ...
The best restaurant in Siena?
- Il Capriccio. But it’s a bit expensive.
Do you like to play jokes on your friends?
- Jokes? Ah yes, often!
Do you collect anything?
- No, never. When we left Bermuda I sold everything!
What was the last book you read?
- Let’s see, a book entitled, The Old Man and the Sea.
What advice would you give to someone coming to study in Siena?
The grammar! Yes. For me learning Italian is the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do in my life. I didn’t anticipate the grammar. It’s very difficult for an anglosaxon, but after a short while I managed to take it in. For a young person it’s easier.

Robert, da quanto tempo sei in Italia?
- Da 5 mesi!
E’ la prima volta che vieni in Italia?
- No, ho visitato la Liguria molti anni fa, quando ero giovane e l’anno scorso ho visitato Firenze con la mia famiglia.
Puoi dire due cose di te?
- Ok, sono inglese, di Londra, ma non ho abitato a Londra per molti anni. Sono un po’ testardo. Imparare la lingua italiana era un obiettivo e non potevo tornare senza averlo raggiunto. Per me era molto importante riuscirci.
Senti, ti ricordi come è nato questo interesse per l’italiano?
- Si, la ragazza di mio figlio parla bene italiano e l’anno scorso quando eravamo insieme in vacanza è nata l’idea. Sapevo che il periodo nelle Bermuda era finito e forse io avevo bisogno di cambiare la mia vita
...e diventare un po’ italiano. E’ veramente un bel cambio!
- Sì, sì, perché mi piace molto l’Italia, la cultura, la ... come si dice ... il modo di vivere, il cibo, il vino ...
Senti, un anno fa dove eri in questo periodo?
- In questo periodo? Mmm ... alle Bermuda. Sì, perché ero già tornato dalle vacanze a Firenze.
E lavoravi alle Bermuda, no?
- Sì, sì.
Quando è stata l’ultima volta che sei stato in una classe per imparare qualcosa?
- Oh ... molti molti anni fa. In classe per lavoro, sì, per lezioni di management, ecc. Ma per imparare qualcosa come una lingua, 25 anni fa!
E’ stato difficile essere in una classe con giovani ed altri adulti?
- No, no. A volte pensavo che fosse difficile con i giovani, specialmente quando i giovani non vogliono imparare la lingua, quando loro sono qui perché i genitori o un'altra scuola li hanno mandati. Perché creano problemi alle persone che vogliono imparare.
E’ stato così qualche volta?
- Mmm ... solamente una volta. C’era una ragazza che non voleva imparare l’italiano, suo padre l’aveva mandata.
Beh, una volta in 5 mesi non è male ...
- Sì, non è male! Mi piacciono molto le lezioni, sono stato fortunato, perché le classi sono piccole ... e questo per me è molto interessante, perché è tutto più concentrato ...
Hai avuto molto tempo per usare la lingua?
- Sì, sì, sì.
La tua opinione su Siena?
- Siena è un po’ conservativa ... non è come ci si aspetta, è differente, è un po’ piccola. Ma la campagna è bellissima.
Tu hai viaggiato molto, no?
Sì si. Sì ho visto molto, da Grosseto a Firenze, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Monte Amiata ...
Il miglior ristorante di Siena?
- Il Capriccio. Ma è un po’ caro ...

- Scherzi? Ah sì, sì, sempre!
Collezioni qualcosa?
- No, mai. Quando abbiamo lasciato le Bermuda ho venduto tutto!
L’ultimo libro che hai letto?
- Allora, un libro con testo a fronte, Il Vecchio e il Mare.
Un consiglio per una persona che viene a studiare a Siena?
- La grammatica! Sì. Per me imparare l’italiano è la cosa più difficile che ho mai provato a fare nella mia vita. Non mi aspettavo la grammatica. E’ molto difficile per un anglosassone, ma dopo un po’ di tempo sono riuscito ad assorbirla. Per un giovane è più semplice.
