Hi Michael! Can you talk a little about yourself?
- Of course! I’m 27 years old. I’m from the United States and I live in Corning, a small village in New York. I studied European History at college, and I also learned Italian in the States. I love to travel, nature, music and the Italian language. When I graduated in 2011, I decided to come to Italy, to Saena Iulia, to learn the language, and WWOOF in Tuscany.
Can you tell us a little bit about that experience in the countryside?
- After studying Italian in Siena, I went to WWOOF in a “Caseificio,” where they make cheese, for a couple of months. I lived with the owner and his family. I worked with him every day, and we would go to the market to sell the products. After that, I lived in the countryside for two months, in a “Agriturismo,” a place where they produce wine. It's a different way to travel. It's an amazing experience.
And the language? How did you feel about it?
- Fine! Sadly, I had to return to the U.S. Now, I work in a bakery, but I’ve just applied in a master’s program to study Italian language and culture.
Your forefathers were Italians, right?
- My grandparents were from Sorrento. They got married in Italy, and after Second World War there was no work. So they decided to come to America. When I was little, I was always with them, and used to listen to them speak Italian and talk about Italy. They wanted to return to Italy.
Did they return?
- Yes, but just once, because my grandmother was afraid of flying.
And have you found your Italian relatives here?
- Yes, they were very welcoming, very nice. I have never had a bad moment here in Italy!

- It's true! It has always been amazing, since the first time I came, to Rome, to do an student exchange program. After that experience, I wanted to come back to study more of the Italian language and culture.
Why did you decide to come to Siena and Saena Iulia?
- I first looked for Italian schools in Tuscany on the Internet. First, I thought about going to Florence, but there are so many tourists there. I had been in Siena before and I liked it very much, so I decided to come here. I chose Saena Iulia because of the nice comments on the website.
And now, you’re here for the second time.
- Yes, I like the school very much, the people that hosted me became my friends. We saw the Palio together, they invited me to the contrada della Torre. The school is perfect, and when I’m in the United States I do Skype lessons with Sabrina. I’ve spoken so much about the school at home, about Sabrina, Mauro, Elettra, everyone! While here, I’ve met people from all over the world, and also Americans who, as I did, wanted to search for their Italian roots and learn the language. I would like to come back every year. 
Would you like to live in Italy?
- Yes, indeed! If I could find something and live here, I would! Life here is very different from the United States. Here there’s a strong sense of family. Sadly, in my country it's not always like that. Here, people come back home to have lunch, dinner, they’re always together. I prefer this lifestyle. I know that there are problems here [laughing], but there are worldwide. I prefer here, also because young people can cook. In the U.S., there are few who know how to cook!
So, maybe you could find love here too!
- Maybe! [Laughing]

Ciao Michael! Puoi parlarci un po’ di te?
- Certo! Ho 27 anni, sono degli Stati Uniti e vivo a Corning, un piccolo villaggio vicino a New York. Ho studiato storia europea all’Università, e ho studiato anche italiano nel mio paese. Mi piace molto viaggiare, la natura, la musica e la lingua italiana. Quando mi sono laureato nel 2011 ho deciso di venire qui in Italia, alla Saena Iulia, per imparare la lingua e lavorare in un caseificio in Toscana.
Potresti raccontarci un po’ di questa esperienza in campagna?
- Dopo aver studiato italiano a Siena, sono andato a vivere in un caseificio dove fanno il formaggio, per un mese. Lì vivevo con il proprietario e la sua famiglia, lavoravo con lui ogni giorno e due volte alla settimana andavamo al mercato per vendere i prodotti. Poi ho vissuto in campagna per due mesi in un agriturismo, lavorando alla vendemmia. È un modo di viaggiare diverso, una bellissima esperienza.
E la lingua? Come ti sei trovato quella volta?
- Molto bene! Purtroppo, ho dovuto ritornare negli Stati Uniti. Adesso lavoro in una pasticceria, ma ho fatto richiesta per fare un master. Voglio diventare insegnante di lingua e cultura italiana negli Stati Uniti.
I tuoi antenati erano italiani, vero?
- I miei nonni erano di Sorrento. Si sono sposati in Italia e dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale non c’era lavoro, quindi hanno deciso di andare in America. Da piccolo io stavo sempre con loro, li sentivo parlare in italiano dell’Italia, di venirci insieme … volevano ritornare in Italia... 
Sono riusciti a tornare?
- Sì, ma soltanto una volta, perché la mia nonna aveva paura di volare … quella volta hanno incontrato tutti i loro parenti in Italia. 
E tu hai trovato dei parenti qui in Italia?
- Sì, mi hanno accolto molto bene. Tutti erano carini … non ho mai avuto una brutta esperienza qui in Italia!

- È vero! È sempre stato fantastico, da quando sono venuto per la prima volta a Roma, per fare uno scambio scolastico. Dopo quell’esperienza ho voluto ritornare per studiare meglio l’italiano. 
Come mai sei arrivato a Siena e alla Saena Iulia?
- Cercando scuole in Toscana su Internet. Prima pensavo di andare a Firenze, ma ci sono troppo turisti. Ero stato a Siena e mi era piaciuta molto, quindi ho deciso di venire qui. Ho scelto Saena Iulia per i bei commenti sul sito web.
E adesso sei qui per la seconda volta …
- Sì, la scuola mi è piaciuta molto. Quelli che mi hanno ospitato sono diventati miei amici, abbiamo visto il Palio insieme, mi hanno portato nella contrada della Torre … la scuola è ottima e quando sono negli Stati Uniti faccio lezione con Sabrina su Skype ...  ho parlato tanto di questa scuola a casa mia , di Sabrina, di Mauro, di Elettra, di tutti! Qui ho conosciuto persone da tutto il mondo, ed anche americani che, come me, volevano cercare le loro radici italiane ed imparare la lingua. Mi piacerebbe ritornarci ogni anno …
Ti piacerebbe anche vivere in Italia?
- Sì, infatti! Se potessi trovare qualcosa e vivere qui, lo farei!È una vita molto diversa da quella degli Stati Uniti, in cui c’è un senso molto forte della famiglia. Purtroppo nel mio paese non è sempre così … in Italia ritornano a casa per pranzo e per cena, stanno sempre insieme, preferisco questo stile di vita. So che anche qui ci sono problemi! [ride], ma ci sono in tutto il mondo …. Preferisco questa mentalità, anche perché le persone giovani sanno cucinare, mentre negli Stati Uniti sono pochi quelli che sanno cucinare! [ride]
Forse potresti trovare perfino l’amore in Italia!
- Forse! [ride]
