Robert! Should we do this interview in Italian?
- Yes, of course!
Why did you want to learn Italian, and when did you begin?
- As a child, I always heard the language spoken, since all my grandparents were born in Italy:  two from the north -- Piemonte and Valle d'Aosta -- and two from the south, near Naples. Therefore, my parents and aunts and uncles grew up in Italian-speaking households. And they used the language strictly among themselves when we got together on holidays and just about every Sunday -- it was like their secret code.  I believe that is really the reason that I can speak the language fairly well. I know how it is supposed to sound, the music of it, the gestures. It's beautiful.

One can tell that this experience has been good for you, you do very well!
- And you are too kind! [smilling] I also studied Italian two years in high school.  After that, at the University of Virginia, there was a one-year foreign language requirement and since they offered Italian, I took it.  To tell the truth, I was not a good student! [laughing].  I was studying architecture, and language was another thing.  Now, I am surprised to find out that I actually learned something.  I didn't realize this before coming to Italy, because I never had the opportunity to use the language in conversation.  I tried speaking at home with my parents, but they would always revert back to English within five minutes. 
And how about your children; do any of them speak Italian?
- No, but I do speak a little Italian with one of my grandsons because he is very good with languages.  His mother is Russian, and she speaks only Russian at home.  Also, two of his Russian grandparents and one great-grandmother live nearby, and they speak only Russian.  He speaks with them in Russian and with me in English, with a Russian accent.  Very funny!  Also, when he was about a year and a half old, I started speaking a little Italian with him, and he still finds it quite amusing. For example, I tell him: “bBravo, piccolino”! And he laughs! An hour later, he tells me: “Bravo, piccolino”! [laughing]. 
Tell us about your city, Boston. Where would you take us if we were there?
- I would take you to my family! There you would see plenty of the culture and of the countryside where they live, which is near Boston. There are also plenty of other places to show you! For example, visiting the neighborhood called the North End,where you can find good Italian food, actually Sicilian. I live in a neighborhood called the South End, but one can walk from one neighborhood to the other in 45 minutes. Another place I’d love to show you is near the sea to the north of Boston: Manchester by the Sea, a lovely New England coastal town with a sweet little village center, a beautiful harbor, and a terrific beach.
Let's talk a little more about Italy. Is this the first time you have come here to study?
- No, before I went to study in Verona, and now here in Siena. It would be difficult to choose one school over the other or to compare the two experiences, because each school has its own atmosphere.  The people I have met here and the things that I have seen and done, I could not have found anywhere else, and vice versa.  And even though I was a bit confused and unsettled on the day of my arrival in Siena, every day the experience just got better and better. This is due entirely to the attentiveness of the staff, Mauro, Sabrina, Elletra. As soon as I expressed my concerns, they listened to me, they sensed my thoughts and feelings, and this helped a lot. I always felt their sincere interest in finding a solution, and their kindness was heartfelt.  This is was very important to me.  I really love the core of this school, its heart and soul, the interactions with the other students, the instructors, the assistants, and the staff. Their presence, enthusiasm, professionalism and genuine friendliness were all really fundamental to the success of my experience here at Saena Iulia. What I find most important is the interaction with other people.
So then, you were able to find good interaction here!
- Yes, very much so! In Siena, I could go on foot throughout the city, sit myself down near other people and begin a conversation, have a lovely chat. Also, on one of the trips that we took with the school, to Cortona, along the road we found and spoke with a beautiful woman, a 93 year old, lady of a certain age, who was sitting in her yard. This is unusual in my experience. Normally when I am alone, I have no problem meeting other people because I am a friendly person. So other people will just come up and talk with me. But to have this kind of experience in a group, where everyone wants to do the same thing, usually this kind of spontaneous interaction does not happen. That experience in Cortona was an absolutely beautiful, significant moment for all of us, truly extraordinary. I really believe that you school folks invited that moment to happen with your open minds and opened hearts.
Thank you so much! And speaking of the city, what is your favorite place here in Siena. Perhaps there is a secret corner you could recommend.
-My favorite place is the Piazza del Campo, at all times of the day. But one recommendation would be to go there at twilight when the sky is such a beautiful deep blue or sometimes full of  color. When the night lights of the city are coming on and the buildings start to glow, it’s a beautiful time to meet friendly people and start conversations. Last night I met three French women, and we did not speak much except in the universal language of smiles and beer!

Ciao Robert! Allora, facciamo l’intervista in italiano?
- Sì, certo!
Perché hai voluto imparare italiano, e da quando lo impari?
- Da bambino, sempre ho sentito la lingua, perché i miei nonni sono nati qui in Italia: due nel nord d’Italia - Piemonte e Valle d’Aosta – e due nel Sud, vicino a Napoli. Parlavano sempre in italiano fra loro, nelle feste, ogni domenica … era come un codice segreto! Penso veramente che quello sia il motivo per cui posso parlare bene l’italiano. So come si sente la lingua, mi piace la sua musica, i gesti, è bellissima …
Si vede che questa esperienza ti ha fatto bene, sei bravissimo!
- E tu sei molto gentile [ride]! Ho studiato l’italiano due anni anche al liceo. Dopo, all’università, avevo bisogno di studiare una lingua per un anno, e loro mi hanno proposto la lingua italiana; quindi, l’ho studiata anche lì. Per dire la verità, non ero un buono studente! [ride] Studiavo architettura e la lingua era un’altra cosa, ma adesso sono sorpreso perché veramente avevo imparato! Ma non lo sapevo perche prima di venire in Italia, non avevo opportunità di parlare con nessuno … a casa mia; ogni volta che provavo a parlare in italiano con i miei genitori, dopo cinque minuti ricambiavano sempre all’inglese!
E con i tuoi figli? Qualcuno parla italiano?
-  No! Ma parlo in italiano a uno dei miei nipotini, perche lui è bravo con le lingue! Sua mamma è russa, e parla solo russo a casa con lui. Ci sono anche i suoi nonni e una bisnonna, che parlano solo russo; lui parla in russo con loro, e con me in inglese con accento russo [ride]. Ed anche, da quando lui aveva un anno e mezzo, io gli parlo un po’ in italiano, e gli è sempre piaciuto molto! Per esempio, gli dico: “bravo, piccolino!” E lui ride! Un’ora dopo, mi dice: “bravo piccolino!” [ridendo].
Raccontaci un po’ della tua città, Boston … dove ci porteresti se venissimo lì?
- Dalla mia famiglia! … Lì si può vedere abbastanza della cultura e del paese dove vivono, che è vicino a Boston. Ci sono anche molti posti da mostrare! Per esempio, mangiare in qualche ristorante nel quartiere che si chiama North end, dove si può trovare cibo italiano, proprio siciliano. Io vivo nel quartiere South end, ma è possibile camminare da un quartiere al’altro in 45 minuti. L’altro posto che mi piacerebbe mostrarvi si trova vicino al mare; a nord di Boston: Manchester by the Sea, una bella città costiera del New England con un villaggio carino, un bellissimo porto, e una spiaggia fantastica.
Parliamo un po’ più sull’Italia … questa è la prima volta che vieni a studiare qui?
- No! Prima sono andato a studiare in una scuola a Verona, e adesso qui alla Saena Iulia. È difficile scegliere o confrontare le due esperienze, perché ogni scuola ha un’atmosfera diversa, e le cose e le persone che ho incontrato qui non potrei trovarle altrove, e viceversa. Ed anche se la mia emozione era un po’ giù quando sono arrivato qui a Siena, ogni giorno l’esperienza è sempre migliorata! Quello che mi è piaciuto è che lo staff, Mauro, Sabrina, Elettra, dal primo momento mi hanno ascoltato, hanno sentito il mio pensiero, mi hanno aiutato; ho sentito sempre la loro sincerità e gentilezza, e questo è molto importante per me; per quello, l’esperienza è migliorata ogni giorno! E mi piace molto anche il cuore della scuola, l’interazione con gli altri studenti e con gli insegnanti, gli assistenti, lo staff: la loro presenza mi ha fatto molto bene, è stata fondamentale per me. Ciò che trovo più importante è l’interazione con le altre persone …
Ed hai potuto trovare questa bella interazione qui?
- Sì, molto! A Siena; sono potuto andare a piedi per tutta la città, sedermi vicino ad altre persone e cominciare a parlare, fare una bella chiacchierata. Anche, in una delle gite che abbiamo fatto con la scuola, siamo andati a Cortona, e nella strada abbiamo trovato e parlato con una bellissima donna, signora di una certa età, che era seduta nel suo giardino … questa esperienza non è normale per me; di solito, quando sono da solo, per me è molto facile incontrare altre persone nella strada, perché sembro una persona aperta e gli altri vengono a parlarmi … ma poter conoscere persone così in gruppo, dove tutti vogliono fare lo stesso, di solito è molto difficile! Quello di Cortona è stato un momento davvero bello e significativo, meraviglioso, non succede spesso ... veramente, penso che sia perché voi, nella scuola, siete persone molto aperte.
Grazie mille! E parlando della città, qual e il tuo posto preferito qui a Siena? Forse, hai un angolo segreto che puoi raccomandare? 
- Il mio posto preferito è Piazza del Campo, in ogni momento del giorno … ma un consiglio potrebbe essere andare lì al tramonto, perché il cielo è bellissimo, azzurro, e dopo è pieno di colori. È possibile vedere anche le luci della città, ed è un bel momento per parlare con le persone che sono lì. Ieri sera ho incontrato tre signore francesi, abbiamo parlato molto, ma la lingua universale: il sorriso e la birra! [ridendo].
