Can you tell me something about yourself?
- My name is Stephanie [“Stefi” here in Italy!], I live in San Francisco where I am a singer and a teacher. I perform live concerts, give private voice lessons to children and adults, and also am the assistant conductor of a Baroque choral ensemble. As a professional musician I wear many different “hats” – conductor, teacher, singer... etc.
Do you like what you do?
- Yes, everything. It is wonderful to love your work!
In your opinion, is it true that you know something well when you know how to teach it?
- This is absolutely true, for example my teacher at the university is a fantastic vocalist and also an excellent teacher. She had such a great deal of experience and a grand love of singing, that it made it easy to teach. She passed along her passion for music to me and I try to pass that along to my students as well.
Do you have hobbies?
- Yes, many, of course! I love to travel (have been all over Europe, the U.S., Australia & New Zealand), and I also like to ride horses. My favorite sports are all outdoors in the mountains: hiking, skiing, trekking, bike riding, etc.
Was this your first time in Italia?
- No, my first time here was 10 years ago. I only visited Rome and spent a few hours in Brindisi! But in five days I saw every museum, statue, landmark.
Have you anything to say about Siena?
- Siena is a very beautiful city. I live in the center and I love being able to see the people strolling Via di Città, browse the shops and eat at the restaurants. But above all, I like sitting in the Piazza del Campo to do my homework, have a coffee, and take in some sun. My life at home is crazy busy. I have been wanting to get away and spend quality time in Italy for many years. Siena was the perfect place to start!
Can you describe San Francisco?
- OK. Of course there is a downtown, but outside this section the Bay Area is very much like Tuscany. There are hills, vineyards. There is the ocean and also mountains. The streets [in San Francisco proper] are narrow with steep hills similar to here. The weather is similar as well.
How has your experience been in our school?
- Oh it’s been wonderful! When I first arrived I didn’t speak a word of Italian. I only knew musical terminology: andante, aria, allegro, fermata, etc. But now it is possible for me to speak with you and with my friends on the telephone. I am so surprised. I didn’t think this would be possible in just 4 weeks! After Siena, I'm going to Florence to live for 6 weeks with two friends who only speak Italian. This has been a great experience and it is very important for me to continue speaking Italian.
How have you found the atmosphere of the school?
- Fine. Everything’s been great, I love the teachers – they are wonderful! The atmosphere is always great I’ve been very content here.

Puoi dire qualcosa di te?
- Mi chiamo Stephanie [“Stefi” qui in Italia], sono una cantante e anche un’insegnante. Faccio lezioni private a bambini e adulti e anche dirigo un coro barocco. Io porto molti “cappelli” differenti! Direttore, insegnante, cantante .. ecc.
Ti piace fare tutto, no?
- Si, tutto. E’ stupendo amare il proprio lavoro!
Secondo te è vero chi si conosce bene qualcosa solo quando si può insegnare?
- Ehm, questo è vero, per esempio la mia insegnante all’università è una bravissima cantante, a lei piace molto insegnare. Lei ha l’esperienza e ha il suo grande amore per il canto, per questo insegnare è facile per lei. Lei ha trasmesso la sua passione a me, e io provo a trasmettere la stessa passione ai miei studenti.
Hai qualche hobby
- Sì, molti, naturalmente. Mi piace viaggiare (ho stato tutti Europa, negli Stati Uniti, e anche Australia), mi piace anche andare a cavallo. Mi piacciono tutti gli sport che si possono fare fuori in montagne: hiking, trekking, andare in bicicletta, ecc.
Questa e’ la prima volta per te in Italia?
- No, la mi prima volta è stata 10 anni fa. Ho visitato solo Roma e poche ore a Brindisi! Ci sono stata per 5 giorni e ho visto musei, statue, ecc.
Hai qualcosa da dire su Siena?
- Siena è una città molto bella. Io abito in centro, e mi piace, la gente che passeggia, i negozi, i ristoranti. Ma soprattutto mi piace sedere nella Piazza del Campo e fare i compiti o bere un caffè, prendere il sole con molta tranquillità. Per questa ragione sono venuta in Italia e qui, la mia vita a San Francisco è molto pazza, io volevo uscire per un po’ da questo, passare un po’ di tempo in Italia e Siena è un posto perfetto per cominciare!
Puoi descrivere un po’ San Francisco?
- Ok. C’è naturalmente downtown, ma fuori da questa area è molto simile alla Toscana, le colline, i vigneti, la “bay area” è così, c’è il mare e ci sono anche montagne. Le strade sono più grandi, non così strette e le case sono più grandi. Il tempo è simile a qui.
Come è stata la tua esperienza nella nostra scuola?
- Ah sì, stupenda! Quando sono arrivata non parlavo italiano. Conoscevo solo le parole della musica: “andante” “aria” “allegro” “fermata” “pianoforte” ma, solo qualche parola. Ora posso parlare con te! Ed i miei amici al telefono sono sorpresi, non pensavano che questo fosse possibile in solo 4 settimane! Dopo Siena, andrò all’estero e poi di nuovo a Firenze, per 6 settimane, con due amici che parlano solo italiano! Così è una buona esperienza. E’ molto importante per me continuare a parlare italiano.
Come è stata l’atmosfera alla scuola?
- Bene, tutto molto bene, mi sono piaciuti molto gli insegnanti - sono bravissimi! L’atmosfera è sempre stata molto bella, sono molto contenta.
