Camille, why do we have the pleasure of having you here in the school?
- It’s a  funny story! My home had just been sold and then I received an invitation to join some folks coming to the school, Annette, Donna Therese and Julie. I didn’t have a new place to live yet, but I said, “I’m going to Italy, this has been my dream forever.” I got on the plane, and here I am!
That’s sounds like a wonderful, crazy thing to do! - So many wonderful things have happened here. I came here to go to school to learn Italian and found so much more. I've had classes before but this is the first time studying abroad.

Your family is Italian, right?
- Yes, my grandparents were Italian. I grew up living with them and they spoke only Italian. They spoke to me in Italian but I had to answer in English. My grandmother would tell me, "You have to live here, work here, speak English!! When they came to the United States it was different. My uncle was beaten up every day at school because he was Italian, and they didn’t want that for me. So that’s why they made me speak English. When I first started to speak Italian, I felt like somebody would come and smack me, like Pavlov's dogs!" [laughing]
We won’t, don’t worry!
- Thank you! [laughing]
Where were you born Camille?
- Brooklyn, New York. In 1975 I was in a car accident, and doctors said I should move to a warm weather place like Florida. But I didn’t want to leave Brooklyn. In central Florida the people were very cold, not welcoming. Then we moved to south Florida, where there are a lot of Italians and New Yorkers!
So, your perfect world!
- Yes! [laughing] A lot of Italian stores, fresh Italian products, mortadella, ravioli, etc. The city is called Hollywood, but it's in Florida. A long time ago, I used to live there and now I'm thinking about returning. There’s the ocean, beautiful beaches, a lot of Italians stores, delis. It’s wonderful!
We can tell that you love Italian culture.
- Yes! Where I grew up nobody spoke English. As a kid my nonna used to take me to the stores with her and they only spoke Italian. I thought I was in Italy. I didn't know that I was in the United States. [laugh]
And when was the first time you came to the actual Italy? - Probably in the early 1980’s, with my ex- husband. His family is from Sicily and mine is from Sorrento so we took a cruise that went to both places. I knew the address that my mother wrote to my grandfather’s family, so I thought about going to that house and taking photographs to show my mother. We were standing on the street and my then-husband said to a random woman, “Do you know any De Simones?”, and she said “Why?”  I told her in my little Italian that my grandfather was Giuseppe De Simone. She grabbed my hand, took me to her house and that’s how I met my family there.

What an incredible coincidence!
- Then I told them, “I’ll be back next week and I want to meet the rest of the family. I want to take you all out to dinner.” So we came back and that night 35 people showed up in the restaurant! [Laughing] It was wonderful!  I’m still in touch and I love to visit them. I will be going to Sorrento to visit them when  school is over.
Besides traveling and meeting new family members, what other passions do you have?
- Flora design. I love it! Also hanging out with my four children and five grandchildren. They’re wonderful people.
Let’s not forget about Gracie (her little dog). She’s part of Saena Iulia now! How did you two meet?
- I was taking my daughter’s dog for a haircut in a pet shop and I saw that face. But I walked out. I came back, saw her again, and I left again. The third time I said, “I have to take her." I brought her with me to Siena and she slept the entire trip. She’s a good girl.
Speaking of Siena,  why did you decide to come here?
- I’m friends with Annette’s sister (a current student). She told me about the school and that Annette, Donna and Julie were coming here and she recommended that I join them.
Did you know about Siena before coming this time?
- Nothing! I thought I was just going to school in Siena, but instead it has been an adventure, a life journey, because this is something that I will hold in my heart the rest of my life. Also, the friendships I’ve found with Annette, Donna and Julie have been wonderful. They've helped me a lot. They have been a gift and a blessing to me.
What else can you say about this adventure?
- The people in the school: I thought there would be teachers and students and that’s it. But everybody was wonderful! The patience, the ability to teach and not laugh very hard when we make mistakes because it's very funny! You are all very kind. I knew I would have to give you my "brain” so I could learn but I didn’t know you all would steal my heart.
But you’re wonderful too, so it isn’t difficult!
- Everybody, really. Aldo has been a blessing helping me up the stairs. One of my favorite moments was in private lessons with Elettra when I said “Wow, I can speak Italian!” I also love the apartment where I’m staying. It's beautiful.
And what does Gracie thinks about the experience?
- She’s very happy. She likes biscotti! And she understands the word "andiamo." I’ll show you: “Gracie, andiamo!” You see? [laughing]
What advice would you give to somebody that is looking for an experience like this?
- I said to myself, “If not now, when?” I always tell my children, “Sometimes you have to take the big bite in life." I took the big bite, because life is short and you have to follow your dream.
Luckily your dream was with us!
- Yes, and you made my dream come true, Thank you!

- Sì, i miei nonni erano italiani.
- Grazie mille [ridendo]
Dove sei nata?
- A Brooklyn, New York.
Come vi siete conosciute?
[ridendo]
- Certo e voi l’avete fatto diventare realtà, grazie!
