Melissa Mellot (USA)

Omni-Melissa

You are from Santa Barbara, CA?
- Yes.
Is there something similar between Siena and Santa Barbara?
- Umm … yes! Both are very charming, smaller cities. Neither is too big or too small and the atmosphere feels more like a small town so the people here are nice and you can get to know people better. I like this because I am originally from a small town in Colorado and small town people make me feel more at home.
Where in Colorado?
- A very small town called Del Norte; it’s in Southwest Colorado.
How long have you been living in Santa Barbara?
- 7 years.
So I guess you know a lot of nice/good restaurants …
- Ummm … definitely.
What’s your favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara?
- My favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara … well, I have a lot, but one of my faves is called “Roys”.
Roys?
- Yes, it’s locally owned by a man named Roy. He is also the chef and he makes fresh soups with fresh vegetables that he gets from the farmer’s market. And it’s open really late and it’s a quiet, little setting downtown. No tourists, mainly just locals.
Great.  What do you do when you have free time in Santa Barbara?
- When I have free time in Santa Barbara … I … drive to Santa Ynez, which is the wine country about 30 minutes from Santa Barbara and I will hike, have a picnic or something like that. Or take a walk on the beach in Santa Barbara or ride my beach cruiser near the beach. I also like to take short day trips in the area to Ojai, SLO, Solvang, Carpenteria.
Good … Do your neighbors know you in Santa Barbara?
- Yes … well, I consider my “neighbors” the guys who work at the coffee shop down the street from where I live or my friends who work at the bookstore or the office or a place I have lunch. These are all places close to my apartment and I see these people every day. We wave when we see each other or mmmm…have a quick conversation.
Everybody has … or they say everybody has a sosia [double] … you know …
- Umm … how do you spell it?
S O S I A … I mean a person exactly the same looking as you …
- (laughing) … apparently I do … a person working in a dental office in Santa Barbara …
Really?
- Hmmm ... yeah and I still haven’t seen her, so I don’t know if I believe it.
How do you know about that?
- Because three people who don’t know each other all told me in one day and they all thought I was her and accused me of cleaning their teeth (laughing) …
… (laughing) That’s a great story!
Do you remember the last movie that you saw?
- Hmmm … the last movie I saw was “The Holiday” and I loved it … nooooo…the LAST movie I saw was in Italian…an American movie in Italian that I saw when I first came to Siena. I don’t remember the title of it, but it had Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant, something about writing a song I didn’t like the movie a lot but I still liked going to a movie in Siena. But the movie I saw before that was “The Holiday” and I loved it.
Did you see it in Santa Barbara?
- Yes and then the week I got to Siena, it was showing here, and I wanted to see it Italian, but I didn’t see it soon enough and it was not in the theaters.
I know that … or I heard that you are busy with spas … that you are writing about them?
- Well I am writing about the Termes and thermal healing waters in Tuscany and I visit them, get a treatment, review and then write about it. Then I put this information on websites and use it for possible articles.
Have you been writing for magazines?
- Yes. I am a spa health writer and reviewer and I write freelance for magazines and websites  but visiting Termes and writing about them is only about 15% of why I am here in Tuscany. Everybody thinks it’s so great that I get to visit spas for free and then write about them. It sounds dreamy when you say you’re going to Tuscany to visit and review spas, but it’s fun but it’s also a bit of a job. Ummm… I am also occupied with just “Tuscany” and have been busy with many other things that interest me more than spas. So, yes I write for websites and magazines …
And … can you suggest a website that we should visit?
- Destress Essentials is a website (www.destressessentials.com) … Spa Defined is another (www.spadefined.com), as well as Santa Barbara Fitness Magazines (www.sb-fitness.com). Any articles that come out of this research won’t be published for several months …
Good. So … do you have brothers and sisters?
- I have one brother … he’s only 11 months younger than I … and he lives in Austin Texas.
Are you the only person of your family who can speak Italian?
- I am the only person who has attempted to speak Italian (laughing) …
What about studying Italian … why did you thought about that … do you remember? When did you get interested in studying Italian?
A: Ummm … I think that’s an easy question for many because it seems pretty clear they want to learn Italian because their job requires it or they want to live here or they have a love of languages or something like that. But I think I wanted to learn it because I love Tuscany and I like challenges and I was feeling bored perhaps and I thought coming to Italy to take the language would be really interesting. And when I decided to take a Italian, some of my friends asked why I didn’t just take it at the local community college. And I thought, why should I do that if I could go to Italy and learn Italian. So it’s definitely more for the experience overall, not just learning the language.
And was it a worthwhile experience?
- Yes, yes … ummm … yes it definitely was … I don’t even know how to explain  it. I could go on and on…living with the host family … everything.
What do you think about Siena? … Now you have been here for how many weeks?
- I have been here for almost 12 weeks … 12 weeks
So you know enough of the city?
- Yes.
How do you find it?
- Ummm … I love it … I prefer … when I am vacationing ... I prefer to go somewhere and get to know the people and learn the lifestyle versus going somewhere for two weeks and doing tours and things like that. So I have to get to know the people in the area to feel comfortable. And I love Siena because it reminds me a lot of Santa Barbara and I can feel like I can walk down the street and see people and say hi and feel at home and it also has a touch of country, so I like that too So it’s not really big city, but it still has everything.
Do you feel safe here?
- I feel very safe here … I walk around at night … actually I think that’s one of the best times to walk around Siena … and see the different light and the buildings and the people … I notice what goes on at night versus the day … and I feel very safe … I walk around all the time at night by myself.
And here … at the school … now that you know us … how do you feel at our school?
- Yes … I feel very safe here. I feel like I have connected with a very good group of core people, who are good people and it’s important for me to establish a network base for professional and personal reasons so that I feel like I belong here and don’t feel so much like a tourist. So I feel that way at this school … and I don’t think I would have felt that way at the other language schools. For me it’s sort of the difference between going to Wal Mart or a “mom and pop” locally owned grocery store.
I heard you were an excellent driver. Did you feel good in the Italian traffic?
- (laughing) … I think I have learned to be a very good driver in Italy. My American friends that visited were impressed with my driving skills! But it’s very difficult to drive here. Now I feel comfortable but I drove to Positano, which was very difficult and … Ummm … but you have to learn to get out of the way and not take it personal if someone honks and realize that Italians just drive aggressively. And you have to learn to read and understand the signs and understand the freeways and the tolls yeah.
That’s also how you learn to be an Italian actually.
Huh … right …and … one of the nicest ladies I met worked in the rental car place … Manuela … she came to deliver my car to Tocchi, the village I was living in. We got to talking, getting to know one another and she invited me to her college graduation party … so … it’s those kind of things that I like.
Well, I hope that you can drive a lot more times in Italy.
- I think I can! But I need to learn the bus and train system better. Honestly that’s one of the reasons I rented a car because I am avoiding what I really don’t like or understand and that is the bus and train system. I think most people are opposite maybe … they don’t want to drive in Italy; they would rather take the bus or train.
Okay … I think we are done … oh one last question … I’ve heard you talk about horoscopes and lucky/magic numbers … what is your horoscope and lucky number?
I love reading my Cancer horoscope and I love the number 3!
Okay, Melissa … thank you very much for this nice interview!
- You’re welcome.

Bene … I tuoi vicini ti conoscono a Santa Barbara?
Come fai a saperlo?
L’hai visto a Santa Barbara?
… Ora sei qui da quante settimane?
- Sono qui da circa 12 settimane … 12 settimane …
Così conosci abbastanza la città?
- Sì.
Come ti sembra?
- Prego.
